Spatzenjager
|
Ulthferen Clan
|
Spatzenjagr was slain in Zerlaaga, where he killed many Tzoruulites including the
High Priest
|
"Hunter of Sparrows needs greater prey
His axe, claw, and fang hight three
No target be safe by night or day
Fear strikes all foes he can see
Born to prowl wildlands the ancient way
Wolf-feral yet wolf-cunning is he"
|
|
A lone wolf among a pack of wolves, Spatzenjager is only barely civilized. His twin
sister was put down because she couldnt control her lycanthropic rages at a young
age, but Spatz was able to learn to control his rages under normal circumstances
and thus lives on.
|
A hereditary werewolf, Spatzenjager thinks of himself as both a man and a wolf,
with the two concepts inextricably merged. Though his own parents are skilled
craftsfolk and live fairly normal lives along with many other Ulthferen in a community,
Spatz has always been a bit wild and preferred to live in the wilderness as much
as possible. He has little understanding of the ways of men, and no great curiosity
either. He lives for the hunt, the thrill of the chase, and the satisfaction of
catching his prey.
|
He is a powerful combatant, capable of nearly-superhuman bursts of strength and
stamina for short periods of time, and as a supernatural creature has some benefits
such as highly damage reistant skin and the ability to regenerate, though slowly.
|
Most significantly he can change into the form of a large wolf or a bestial man-wolf
hybrid at will any time of the day or night except for short periods of every month
when the moon is completely waned. However, during full moons he turns into his
were form uncontrollably, and in that form he sometimes falls prey to blood lust.

Spatz was a very potent warrior and one of my favorite characters of the original
Nine. However the player had to leave the country as part of a research project
he was doing pretty early on in the campaign. I took Spatz over as a GM NPC and had him go missing. Everyone assumed
he had been slain by the Kor-Daen due to some legerdemain on my part to plant the
idea however I had him following the group and watching from a distance. I managed
to drop a few subtle hints of wolves seen in the hills, the occasional howl, and wolf spoor
as the PC's traveled to and lived in Zerlaaga here and there without giving the game away.
|
A good deal later when Saemund, Kjar, Fyrclian, and Kurtzen were going after Bakuda
Rashuda (the big baddy of the first major arc), when the chips were down I had Spatzenjager
make his final curtain call. Ayden rejoined the action at the same time, so it worked
out nicely that the two had hooked up at some point "off-screen" and had been lurking
about unseen in the meantime, waiting to make their move when it mattered.
|
Spatz going off in full on frenzied werewolf form (plus Ayden's precise archery)
turned the tide, and Spatz carved his way thru a small horde of Gifted Tzoorulite
warriors to strike down Bakuda Rashuda himself. When Spatz's frenzy wore off he
had sustained more BODY damage than he had BODY and he died nobly and heroically.
Good times.
|
I would have liked to have seen where Spatz ended up if he had survived to the end,
but he was rock solid in the 200's and a great character all around both mechanically
and roleplaying wise.
