Vespulans,
Royal
Wasp-like creatures
that stand about 1.5m tall and have an iridescent
exoskeleton
The Vespulans
are an insectoid race whose society is a
complete caste system. There are the royal
vespulans and the drone vespulans. The royals
mind their slave class and manage them with
great efficiency. The drones consist of
many different kinds suited to the different
labors that must be performed. There are
warrior drones and worker drones, and many
different varieties of each. [They are not
completely mindless, but they do lack any
individualism and drive that sets heroes
apart from everyone else, so the only playable
type of Vespulan are the Royals.]
Due to their ecologically
enforced slave class, Vespulan’s have tremendous
production power and industrial might. But,
since the ratio of Drones to Royals is about
1000 to 1, there isn’t nearly as much opportunity
for technological ingenuity simply because
there aren’t as many ‘minds’ in the population.
They commonly enlist the help of other races
to do their engineering for them.
Royal Vespulans
are some of the richest beings in the galaxy.
Their wealth distribution is ridiculously
imbalanced, but that isn’t the only reason.
They are able to survive in the cold vacuum
of space on their own, largely due to their
chemosythetic metabolism, and rigid exoskeleton.
This enables these natural colonizers to
colonize worlds that other races wouldn’t
even consider, allowing them greater access
to more resources. Vespulan mining colonies
are by far the most profitable. One problem
they do have is with limited mobility on
heavier planets. Vespulans evolved on a
low G world (0.8) and have some trouble
managing their increased weight in 1G and
higher environments. Even on their homeworld,
they weigh too much for their wings to work
effectively and they are mostly vestigial.
Some subspecies do have functioning wings,
while other’s have stingers. The subrace
presented here is a Violet Vespulan, which
lacks both of those qualities.
Vespulans in the
campaign: Vespulans make for great scouts
and commandos due to their diverse senses
and life support. They also make a solid
base for any character who wants to wield
political or logistical power in the game.
Nothing says “Stick ‘em up buster” like
a Vespulan Hive-Fleet at your command.

Colonized Worlds:
They really wouldn’t be considered worlds,
but more barren space rocks. Their main
colonies are in the Orca Flagella’s rich
dust laden asteroids and ice-belts.
