Vocations

Spellbinder [  ]

The Spellbinder Vocation allows the following special Exploits:

  • Exploit: You may use your Spellbinder Vocation die (without stepping it down) to channel pure extradimensional energies, allowing you to emulate any other Ability for a single action or reaction; if you do 1's, 2's, and 3's count as opportunities (but only 1's are excluded from the results).

Scholar [  ]

The Scholar Vocation allows the following special Exploits:

  • Exploit: Recall useful information regarding an academic subject you might reasonably have learned a little something about in the past (GM's discretion applies).
  • Exploit: You may reroll a dice pool that includes your Smarts; the second result must be kept.
  • Exploit: During a Transition Scene you can create a knowledge related d8 Asset if you are able to cram information on that subject.

Standard Exploits

All Vocations have the following standard exploits available to them.

  • Exploit: Augment Dice Pool Result: for a dice pool result that inludes your Vocation trait die, you may either keep an extra die for your total or step up the effect die.
  • Exploit: Create a Asset: a Asset is a temporary d6 trait that represents a professional contact, a piece of equipment, or some kind of useful knowledge related to your Vocation. The Asset lasts until it is removed by someone or because it becomes no longer relevant to the narrative. Write down [Name of the Asset]: d6; you may add it as an additional die whenever the Asset is relevant to an action or reaction. How long it may take to create a particular Asset, and whether it can be done as part of an Action Scene or must be done in a Transition Scene is left to common sense and GM's discretion.
  • Exploit: Affect Complications: if there is a Complication that your Vocation pertains to, you can step it down or remove it from play by describing how your expertise allows you to overcome the Complication. If the Complication is a d6 eliminate it, if it is d8 or higher step it down. Alternately, if you can justify how your Vocation applies, you may create a d6 Complication and put it into play or step up an existing Complication.

Milestones

Feeling the Flow

As a natural spellbinder you subconsciously feel the ebb and flow of extradimensional energies as you move about in the world, and are somewhat susceptible to a feeling of ennui in places where the barrier between dimensions is thick and of elation in areas where the barrier is thin. Your sensitivity can also help you perceive mystical workings in your vicinity, but it can also sometimes overwhelm you with headaches or momentary dizziness in the face of particularly strong stimuli.

Goal
Reward

The first time in a session you inject your awareness of ambient extradimensional energies and their effect on you into the narrative.

+1 Plot Point

The first time in a session you become so overwhelmed by particularly strong or weak extradimensional energies in your vicinity that you choose to take d8 Ego Stress.

+1 Plot Point

The first time in a session you use your Spellbinder Vocation exploit and succeed.

gain a Exploit invocation

Societatis ex Monstrum Initiate

You are part of an ancient society of monster hunters, due to family history more than inclination. The organization is extremely old-world in its character and expectations, and byzantine in its secretiveness. To complete your induction and become an Interfector you must first prove your worthiness by seeking out and dealing with a significant supernatural threat without Societatis assistance. Privately you aren't that into it, but you do not intend to let Hans...your uncle, mentor, and sponsor...down.

Goal
Reward

The first time in a session you make progress towards completing your mission.

gain a Exploit invocation

The first time in a session you get an exceptional success against a supernatural threat that is of equal Tier or higher.

gain one (1) Advance

When you complete your trial and become inducted as an Interfector of the Societatis.

gain two (2) Advances, then retire this Milestone Set and choose another one

Lars was orphaned when he was eight years old by a horrific car accident which claimed both parents as well as the occupants of the other vehicle. Lars should not have survived, but somehow was "thrown clear" of the vehicle and was found thirty feet away still buckled into his car seat, completely unscathed.

His remaining known family was in Europe and lacking any other care provider stateside, Lars was briefly held in a Child Protective Services run orphanage while attempts were made to contact his European kin. A week later a tall, stern looking man named Hans Sors arrived bearing various papers to prove himself a second cousin of Lars, and claiming to represent the family's interests in the US. He took custody, and Lars departed with his previously unknown distant relation. Cousin Hans lived in Berkeley, Ca and claimed to be a professor of "advanced parapsychology" at the University. And though Hans never seemed to actually teach any classes on the campus, "students" would periodically come by his townhouse for "individual instruction". Hans was ill-suited to raise a young boy but did not shirk the responsibility; Lars was enrolled in a prestigious private school and was well provided for. Lars understandably suffered from emotional trauma and Uncle Hans was particularly good at helping in this area, proving to be a skilled therapist.

By the time he was ten Lars was sufficiently recovered from his ordeal and Hans deemed him ready to begin his apprenticeship. Slowly, carefully, Hans peeled back the masquerade of mundane reality and began Lars' indoctrination into the mystical arts. Eventually all was made known and Lars learned that he is a member of not one but two separate families that are each part of a larger cabal of interrelated family lines of Spellbinders, with a provenance rooted in ancient times. Lars is of the Kenning and Sors houses specifically and was born with a strong natural gift for magic, but neither of his parents had an active magical talent. As the two houses have a long and mixed history of rivalry and broken alliances, his parents joining was a Romeo and Juliet like case of star-crossed lovers defying familial feuding. They had departed Europe to put distance between themselves and their difficult kin. Finally Hans revealed to Lars that he had not survived the car accident that killed his doomed parents by chance but rather had instinctively channeled raw magic to translocate himself to safety, proving an impressive talent for the art.

That alone would be enough of a dramatic origin for most people, but there was more. Hans also revealed that he himself, like many of the Sors family, was a member of an esoteric order called the Societatis ex Monstrum Interfectorum that focused on dealing with dangerous supernatural threats, and he intended to train Lars to one day take his place in the secret society. Lars had little say in the matter, and thus his apprenticeship and training began. Hans proved to be a hard but fair taskmaster as he carefully honed Lars skills for the next twelve years, weaving the training around a life of academic pursuits as Lars continued his schooling. On the same day that Lars graduated with an accelerated Masters degree in Library Sciences, Hans also deemed Lars a journeyman Spellbinder and sponsored him for induction into the Societatis ex Monstrum Interfectorum as an Interfector...aka a Hunter. Thus Lars' adult life began.

Hans has recently been making noises about retiring both from his mundane life returning to Europe, leaving Lars to continue the work of the Societatis, and seems to mean it. He's recently sent Lars out into the world with orders to seek out and deal with some significant supernatural threat on his own to prove himself capable, and then return for further instruction. Lars is reluctant but determined to not let his uncle down.
