Limit: Magical Ring: This Ability Set is shut down if you are deprived of your magical ring; gain one (1) Plot Point when this becomes a Complication for you. You may recover the ring when it is appropriate to the narrative; this may require you to activate an opportunity or take an action against the doom pool at the GM's discretion.

Vocations

The Survivor Vocation allows the following special Exploits:

  • Exploit: You may step up and double Awareness when taking an action or reaction related to not being surprised.
  • Exploit: You may step up and double Finesse on reactions to avoid detection or harm; if you do you may include an additional die in your total.
  • Exploit: If you are attempting to hide from something potentially harmful and fail a roll to avoid detection, you may reroll.
  • Signature Exploit: You may avoid taking Stress from a single physical attack, as one of your ghost friends intervenes to protect you in some way.

Standard Exploits

All Vocations have the following standard exploits available to them.

  • Exploit: Augment Dice Pool Result: for a dice pool result that inludes your Vocation trait die, you may either keep an extra die for your total or step up the effect die.
  • Exploit: Create a Asset: a Asset is a temporary d6 trait that represents a professional contact, a piece of equipment, or some kind of useful knowledge related to your Vocation. The Asset lasts until it is removed by someone or because it becomes no longer relevant to the narrative. Write down [Name of the Asset]: d6; you may add it as an additional die whenever the Asset is relevant to an action or reaction. How long it may take to create a particular Asset, and whether it can be done as part of an Action Scene or must be done in a Transition Scene is left to common sense and GM's discretion.
  • Exploit: Affect Complications: if there is a Complication that your Vocation pertains to, you can step it down or remove it from play by describing how your expertise allows you to overcome the Complication. If the Complication is a d6 eliminate it, if it is d8 or higher step it down. Alternately, if you can justify how your Vocation applies, you may create a d6 Complication and put it into play or step up an existing Complication.

As an empath, you are dialed in to the emotions of those around you in real time. This gives you deep intuitive insight and can inform your social interactions, but it also makes you vulnerable to becoming over stressed by the constant assault of other peoples mental states.

I See Dead People

Long ago one of your ancestors made a pact, which the ring you wear is the physical manifestation of. Through that pact you are aware of the spirit world of the Astral Plane and have influence over ghostly entities. And they have influence over you as well. This is mostly beneficial but it does complicate your life.

Inheritor of a dark and mystic legacy, and cursed by a pyschic talent for empathy...Cordelia never had a chance at normal. Her teen years were a blur of confused emotions and mental instability, unaware of her psychic nature, unable to control it, and surrounded by people who even when well meaning could not hope to help and often only made the problem worse, bombarding Cordelia with emotions and adding to her confusion. Cordelia was prone to meltdowns and public disturbances; some requiring police intervention.

But Cordelia's family had once held bushels of money, and her and her mother were the sole living scions and thus beneficiaries of a sizeable remaining chunk of change. And where there is money, there is special consideration. Thus rather than juvenile detention or jail or the street, Cordelia spent much time on the couches, settees, divans, and lounge chairs of a long string of counselors, psychologists, and psychiatrists. When head shrinking didn't work, they tried meds. When that didn't work, they tried more meds. This iterated a few times. Finally she was electively institutionalized, "for her own good".

Cordelia likely would have spent most of her life in a medicated state wandering the halls and rec room of a facility for troubled minds, but when she was 26 her mother died and creditors appeared out of the woodworks. In the aftermath, Cordelia no longer had the money to remain at the facility, or for expensive therapy and the prescription drugs on demand that came with it. She was left with a small trust fund sufficient to get by on if frugal, her clothes and personal effects, and some family heirlooms...including a ring that had once belonged to Cordelia's grandmother that she had always coveted but that her mother had forbidden her to touch or wear. So, of course, putting it on was just about the first thing Cordelia did once it was in her possession.

This proved to be both a blessing and a curse. The ring is no mere mundane trinket, but a powerful and ancient artifact with a long history intertwined with Cordelia's ancestry. The ring ties Cordelia to an ages old pact with otherworldly forces, granting her the protection and assistance of ghosts. Some may have been driven crazy by the ensuing ghostly visitations and interference in their life by shades of people long dead that others can not see...but Cordelia was a weathered survivor of the no-mans land between sane and insane. She not only managed to deal with this new reality, it actually helped her to master her own empathic abilities...though perhaps improvement in that area was more due to no longer being doped to the gills on prescription drugs.

Now Cordelia has a different kind of life...decidedly not "normal"...but not without its up moments. Some of the ghosts who watch over Cordelia urge her to get involved in various unusual undertakings such as helping the recently departed to settle matters left behind like avenging their murders or putting things right for a loved one, as well as more general supernatural affairs...and they sometimes even take steps to involve her if need be.
