Effect: Precognition gives awareness of possible futures. At lower steps this takes the form of intuition or 'guesses' that are correct more often than not, but at higher steps can be used on actions to attempt to see a possible future and to create precognitive themed Assets and Complications. At all steps Precognition can be used on reactions to protect against being surprised or harmed with the premise of forewarning. Precognition uses the Extended Range Chart.
At d4 a character is only able to get the smallest glimpses of the very near future. This would be sufficient to successfully 'guess' coin flips more often than not and similar either-or predictions.
At d6 a character has an intuitive sense of the near future and can take an action against the doom pool to attempt to gain insight prior to making decisions relating to emerging narrative events; if successful the GM must provide the character's controller with a legitimately useful hint or clue using the successful attempt's effect die as a guide for how much information to provide.
At d8 in addition to their intuitive sense of the future, a character may also perceive future events via visions or out of body experiences. Also, the character's awareness of the future may now expand to days or weeks. Additionally, at this step the character gains the ability to create narrow-use d6 Assets grantable to others with the premise of having warned the recipient of some future event, and to place similar d6 Complications on others with the premise of having foreseen or machinated a bad outcome for the target. Finally, at this step a character may step Precognition down twice and use it as if it were Luck.
At d10 a character's awareness of the future expands to months or a few years. Additionally at this step a character can use Precognition to attempt to foresee what another character within their range might do next, by taking an action targeting that character's Tier + Psyche + any relevant Distinctions + any relevant defensive Ability traits (such as Warding); if successful the controller of the target character must provide the controller of the character using Precognition an explanation of what their character is going to do next at a level of detail appropriate to the effect die, and their character is committed to stick to that plan of action. At this step, the precognitive Assets and Complications made by this character enter play at a d8 instead of a d6.
At d12 a character's awareness of the future is limited only by the GM's discretion. At this step, the precognitive Assets and Complications made by this character enter play at a d10 instead of a d8.
Common Limits: Because it isn't really possible to predict the future in real life, Precognition places a special burden on the GM to adjudicate and can put special pressure or restrictiveness on the emerging narrative. Due to this, some GM's might choose to only allow Precognition at lower steps or perhaps not at all, or may require one or more Limits to be taken by a character to narrow the Ability trait's scope.
The Uncontrolled Visions Limit can be applied to place the ability to foresee the future under the GM's control; Precognition can still be used for its various other functions (to make intuitive 'guesses', on reactions to avoid harm, to emulate Luck, to create Assets and Complications, etc), but detailed knowledge of the future in the form of visions or out of body experiences is initiated by the GM (to be used as a plot device or narrative foreshadowing tool).
The Superintelligence Limit can be applied to represent a form of Precognition based on making accurate predictions as a function of intelligence rather than actual awareness of the future. In practice, this form of Precognition functions normally but is restricted to actual probabilities (for instance, could not be used to successfully predict coin flips any better than 50% of the time), and is much more uncertain or lacking in vividness of detail. This form of Precognition is neither Psychic or Mystical and is instead considered to be a Special Ability trait.
