TACTICS
Karestal wields powerful Divine magic, despite avoiding directly offensive spells by his own choice. In addition to being a potent healer, he also has many divinatory and protective magics.

He also has a good deal of "people" skill, and is reliable for a broad array of general knowledge. In all, his counsel and advice is often sought after.

He is also surprisingly adroit at wielding his walking stick to defend himself if need be, though this is a skill that he only displays when he must.

Appearance: A silvery haired man of advancing years, with a slight stoop. He walks with the aid of a cane, and wears simple and understated but good quality dark robes of a blue and purple hue. He usually has a welcoming and friendly countenance, with warm eyes and an easy smile. However, he misses little, and has an iron will that is sometimes displayed with a firm set of his jaw and shoulders.
Personality: Karestal is a kindly and benign elder man who though reserved still manages to exhude friendliness and acceptance. His winning personality is such that most folks forget that he (pretends) to be a servant of a god of Death in short order. However, he is always quick to point out if there is any misconception, Mherazen is a death god in the sense of a serene and orderly passing at one natural time, and the promise of a haven after one passes, not in the sense of a god of wreaking death.

Many folks feel fond of Karestal, thinking of him terms of a favored elder uncle or grand father, and his kindly, non-confrontational manner and wise counsel are also well received.
Quote: "The way lies in that direction, and it is perilous, but by the grace of my patron we shall pass quickly and possibly even unseen."
Background: The man known as Karestal is a mystery. Claiming to be a Priest of Mherazan, a god of Death, Knowledge, and Law, he has helped many in need over the decades. In reality Karestal is not his name at all, and in fact he is not a servant of Mherazen; rather he is a servant of Tzoruul as he is worshipped by the group called Friends In Shadow, as a god of Trickery, Knowledge, and Good. In brief their typical behavior is to gather information via subterfuge and trickery, and use that information to work towards opposing evil, selfish, destructive, and warlike ends.

They are an essentially non-violent sect, preferring to work through artifice, deception, diplomacy, and indirectly through the unwitting. Some members take the ideal of non-violent solutions further than others; for his part Karestal will only use his magic to directly harm another in the direst of circumstances. He instead uses the potence invested in him by his diety to aid others, and to gain useful information.

Karestal entered the saga of the Nine Arrows in Centhaus, where he appeared unbidden as the heroes and their allies hid out in a basement as Heligkamper posses scoured the city for them, and offered to lead them out of the city and guide them to Orungar where their quarry, Ketkis, awaited. The heroes were quite nonplussed that this stranger seemed to know so much about who they were and what their plans were, but in the end the congenial elder man persuaded them to trust him, and using several of his spells in tandem he successfully lead the group out of the hostile burg and well on their way to Orungar.

Thereafter Karestal proved to be a very helpful addition to the band, for even thought he did not add much to their offensive capability, his ability to heal and augment the group, as well as discover extremely valuable information were of paramount importance. With his aid, the heroes were able to root out Ketkis easily, leading him to make an ill-prepared and ultimately futile attack on the Arrows before fleeing. And again it was Karestal who determined that Ketkis had fled to Kark, where the heroes then followed, and again once they were in Kark once more Karestal was instrumental in sussing out Ketkis (though to be sure it was more difficult and took longer than it had in Orungar as Ketkis was now taking better precautions against divination).

Finally, the heroes brought Ketkis down, and recovered from his possession a powerful artifact holy to Tzoruul which Ketkis was using for ill purposes. Karestal prevailed upon the heroes to remand the relic to his possession, assuring them that it would be well and mystically protected from falling into the wrong hands again. In the end the heroes agreed to this plan, and Karestal departed their company with the relic.
